I understand that there are reasons why people think of John Henry West exclusively as an emo/screamo band; Gravity Records, Mike Kirsch, southern California, and the early ’90s are all good reasons to rush to judgement.
I, on the other hand, think of John Henry West as a raw hardcore band albeit with some of those noisy ’90s flourishes. In a way, I could imagine their EP being released by Katorga Works (or even Prank) today and sounding really current and relevant; this is clearly not true of that entire Gravity/San Diego scene.
Also: the riffs and the vocals on the on their EP is unadulterated early Rollins-era Flag worship. Here’s my favorite example.
